Unleashing Creativity in Corporate Presentations
The CEO of a commercial real estate company, after watching 8 teams do in-house presentations said, “They need help!” I was called in to lead a Command the Room workshop for the teams. My emphasis was to enhance physical presence, confidence, and articulate speech. We focused on these areas through storytelling and practical tools.
Sparking Creativity: Unconventional Ideas
To spark creativity, I introduced an exercise where teams presented absurd real estate products. Here are a couple of examples:
Time Traveling Elevator: An elevator that takes occupants on a virtual time travel experience during the ride, making mundane trips between floors more exciting.
Virtual Assistant Fish Tank: A fish tank with holographic fish that serve as virtual assistants, responding to voice commands and helping with daily tasks.
The teams were remarkably engaged and creative, captivating enough to keep the attention of any audience. The comment I heard most referred to how much fun they were having with their presentations.
The Shift in Energy
However, when I tasked them with presenting their new in-house AI bot, the room lost its energy. No more smiles, laughter, or fun. It felt like all the air had been sucked out of the room, illustrating why corporate presentations often fall flat.
The teams became so serious and there was an element of fear as well. Their creativity flat-lined. No one was having fun. They changed from being warm human beings to corporate automatons. This is why corporate meetings and presentations are usually deadly dull.
The Impact of Dull Presentations
The sad truth is that when meetings are that tedious, attendees don’t pay attention and generally don’t get much retainable information. All the prep work, planning, and expense is for naught. It is understandable that employees want to perform at their highest level. Stepping on, submerging personality and creativity is not productive for anyone.
Empowering Presenters: Lessons Learned
My Command the Room workshop helped participants to see:
Where the dull comes from
To trust their creative instincts and make the presentation uniquely their own
Understand the power of a smile
Understand their interest and enjoyment of the presentation is contagious.
They realized presentations can be both professional and fun.

Testimonial
“I thoroughly enjoyed Sally Morgan’s 'Command the Room' workshop. It was perhaps the best employer provided all-day training session I’ve attended in my 26 years in the workforce. She was a superb presenter and taught me a lot about body language, eye contact and verbal communication that I had never thought about before. The entire day vastly exceeded any expectations I might have had and I’m grateful for such an engaging, informative, and useful educational opportunity.”~ Will Henson, NJM
